"The American Association (a British development company) came to this area in 1889 and were responsible for the development of Middlesboro, KY, many of the buildings at present day Lincoln Memorial University, Harrogate, TN, and various coal companies in the area.

The name choosen by the Association for the town in the cleavage of the Gap's saddle was "Dillwyn Springs".   Many of the street names ending in "wyn" and "lyn" remain from the plan, but Dillwyn was dropped.   The area had been known as Cumberland Gap as far back as 1751.   Later in 1775, Boone passed through on his way to the West."
